“Sparking Hope.

Igniting Optimism.

Creating the Currents for a Brighter Future.”

The Community Powerhouse Family Literacy Project targets primarily African American men aged 17 – 24.

The project is funded by J.Marion Sims Foundation and Lancaster County Partners for Youth, and various businesses and individuals in the community.

The Powerhouse vision is to spark hope, ignite optimism, and create the currents for a brighter future for the young men it serves.

The Literacy project works to shape and empower the minds of young men by providing them with literacy skill training.  Participation in this program has successfully reduced the number of African American males entering or re-entering a life of crime, substance abuse, and risky behaviors in the community.

The Community Powerhouse addresses the needs of the whole individual.  The education provided helps to decrease the emotional barriers created by cultural issues that limit the academic, social, and civic potential of these at risk young men.  Many of the program graduates return to formal education, higher education, or enter vocational training.
